“What kind of name is Face?” a voice was heard saying.

“I don’t know, but she is so strange.  She said she’s from a circus but I think her parents didn’t want her so they named her something stupid on purpose.”

“Well I heard she ran away from the circus but I bet you anything the circus kicked her out because she was too weird.”  Another voice said from her right.

“Face, do not listen to them,” said a young female voice and Face turned toward a classmate with flowing hazel hair and perfect hazel eyes.  What was someone so beautiful and normal doing talking to her?

Face sighed, looking around the classroom, wishing that she could have been someone different.  She wouldn’t have picked this life for herself if she had a choice.  She knew she wasn’t normal and appeared strange but the other kids treated her like she was this way on purpose.  It was just a tragic accident.  She was born as a Tulpa.  Tulpas are a species that can change forms but her natural form was, indeed, human.  Her spectral form
was a bird-like creature.

“I know what you are.” The girl said softly, her whispering voice flowing into Face’s eardrum.

Face turned toward the woman, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end.  The sound of this woman’s voice gave her an eerie feeling that she was telling the truth.  Did this stranger know that she was not merely a human?  That she held powers that mere mortals could only dream of having?  Now that she thought about it, she began to sense the boiling power within this young female and she shrunk into her seat and turned toward the teacher who was lecturing.

The girl laughed, “Please don’t get frightened.  I am not a foe.”

Face turned slowly to make eye contact with the girl, “Who are you?”

The female nodded, “I can understand your apprehension.  My name is Alta.  I am a Tulpa, just as you are, although you are not doing a very good job of blending in with these humans now, are you?”

Face froze as she had thought she was the only Tulpa within this school.   She cursed to herself for not only missing this fact but for also not detecting that this girl was not a regular human.  What was going to happen now?  Was this woman going to fight her?

“Of course I am not here to fight you.  I don’t see how fighting with your own kind will benefit us anyway.  It is sad your first thought would be I was here just to fight you.  Honestly, I am here to just talk with you; to converse with someone of my own kind.”

Face still did not know whether to trust this girl.   All year she had been tormented by these mindless humans and the whole time it seemed there was someone just like her, sitting right next to her in class. She was still confused as to why she didn’t know and concerned that this girl waited until now to tell her.  There were so many things she wanted to know about this stranger but whether or not she should trust her was the real question here.

The bell bellowed across the school now, followed by the frantic scurrying of the classmates around her. They shoved all their belongings into their bags, walking out of the class as the teacher was still talking.

“Please come with me.” Alta’s voice was reassuring.  Face did not know whether this trust was justified but she followed her none the less.

Alta walked down the hallway, in a rather quick speed, which made Face’s legs burn just trying to catch up with her.  The amount of students around them began to dwindle as they made their way toward the buses.  Face turned to look at Alta and noticed that her hazel hair was flowing back, exposing her neck and a long, jagged scar.  She was going to comment on it but Alta, sensing her thoughts, quickly moved her hair back over the scar and continued to walk swiftly down the hallway.

“Here we go,” she said, stopping abruptly.   Face almost slammed into her back of her as she was practically running to try and keep up with her.

“I thought we were leaving?”

Alta nodded, opened the door to a classroom, allowing them to enter.   Face looked around at the seemingly normal looking schoolroom, aside from the large window that was open to allow fresh air in. She still did not understand this stranger’s motive and couldn’t figure out why she trusted her so blindly.

Alta smiled at Face, beginning to walk over to the window before crouching down on the side of it, “Well let’s go.”

Face scratched her head nervously, “What do you mean?”

Alta raised one eyebrow, “Transform of course.  I want to show you something.  We can only get there by flying.”

This was all coming to such a shock to Face and she had no idea what to make of this friend or foe.  She had never transformed in school grounds and it made her skin itchy even thinking about getting caught. There was no way she would be able to stay here if she were to be found out.  In addition, her family would be very angry at her and the thought of that made her cringe.

“Quit worrying, just follow, and don’t think about it.  No one ever got anywhere in life by worrying.” With that said, Alta crouched low to the ground and her body began to encase in light.  The air around her vibrated, pulling in all the excess air around them; the chairs and desks began to move towards her as her body began to morph and change.

The shape had no true form, just a bright item of light until it began to flash, blinding her eyes from the transformation. The ground shook quietly, the chalk on the boards falling to the floor and the lights on the ceiling crackled.

When Face turned her eyes back towards Alta, she saw a raven in her place.  Its black, ominous wings arched up, flapping repeatedly and it let out an obnoxious caw.  It hopped over towards her, pulling at her skirt with its beak.

“Okay, okay!” Face said, knowing that Alta would not leave her alone until she had transformed into her spectral form.  As quickly as she could, she crouched down close to the cold tile floor and closed her eyes, concentrating on the task at hand.

Alta moved away from Face as she began to transform.  Her body began to sparkle and her pink hair with their blue tips began to shimmer.  The individual strands began whipping around in the air and slowly, they stopped moving and the light dispersed, revealing a small pink bird.  The bird’s feathers had blue tips visible when she stretched out her wings.

Alta nodded her head, elongating out her black wings, “Are you ready to take flight?”

Face was still wary of who this person was and where she was going to take her.  Was this all just a trap to take her somewhere?  Fellow Tulpas were not generally nice to others, unless there was something in it for them.  Tulpas were creatures that were known to have secret agendas, whether it is good or bad and she could not help herself from being apprehensive.

“Are you coming?” the fellow Tulpa said.

Face took a deep breath and nodded, pulling out her wings and jumping out of the window with Alta.  She chirped loudly in happiness, feeling free to be in her form, a form that she had not transformed into for quite a while.  She was still anxious to where she was headed, following close behind the raven.  Face knew it was just a matter of time she until she reached their destination and ultimately, her fate.
