Elzy crouched low to the ground. The sky was dark; the moon hoarding its light, allowing no normal human enough luminosity to distinguish anything in the proximity.

Good thing Elzy was not a typical human.

She pressed her lips together and let out a whistle. There was silence for a couple seconds until another whistle answered her in response.

A sly smile crossed her lips, “Excellent.” She muttered to herself.

Looking around, the tree she was resting in was far off the ground, but she took comfort in this fact. She found ease in being off the ground, to share an environment with a species that she had spent her whole life trying to learn from.

The darkness crept along the ground, pushing the shadows over the little light given to her eyes. Yet, she scanned the area, her eyes rapidly moving around.

“Too slow,” She yelled out, “You have to be quicker than that!”

Jumping into the air, she caught herself on another branch of the large tree. She averted her gaze downwards to see a dark figure rocket past the area that she had been resting moments before.

She smiled to herself as she could hear sharp talons curl around a branch next to her. Elzy could hear its claws tear into the bark, ripping into it.

“You did well, Sindri.”

The owl tilted its head at her in an angle that made its neck look broken. She hid the urge to laugh, because she knew how it liked to tease her right back.

Looking at this owl, its feathers glistened in the small light of the moon. Elzy didn’t know where she would be without Sindri, but she was happy that she had met him in her time of need.

“Shall we take a rest now?”

The owl hooted, sending a rush of warmth through Elzy’s heart. She loved this bird more than she loved anything in this world. It had been with her through everything, even now when she was trying to become a witch.

Owls were creatures that immensely intrigued her. They held powers that kept her curiosity peaked, and she wanted to understand more about them and to learn every single thing that she could.

The woods were now quite, eerily quiet and Elzy felt rather uneasy at this new rising fact. The woods were never a place to stay calm for long. There were always sound within the depths, coming from not only the owls but the animals and other mystical creatures. She wanted to venture deeper, to find any more excitement that she could, but a bad feeling began to rush over her. What could this feeling be? Could it truly be something dire and should she even listen to such potential fallacy?

She gripped the branch next to her, kneeling down close to the wood.

“Did you hear that?” she asked Sindri.

The bird tilted its head towards the strange noise. It sounded like a clanking, as if something was being constantly dragged. Elzy had never heard this kind of noise before, and it made her body ripple with nervous energy. She wanted to run away from this possibly foreign threat but yet somehow the curiosity to know what lurked behind that strange clamor intrigued her.

“I wouldn’t even think about going to see what that noise is, you will regret it as your bird will become one of theirs.”

Elzy froze. How had she not sensed this person in her midst?

She was rather gifted with finding out if she was being followed, and even if she overlooked it Sindri would usually let her know. Yet, what did he mean that her owl would become theirs?

“What do you mean theirs?”

The voice took a long while to respond and it made her quite uneasy in a short amount of time. She really regretted the decision to not running away when she first heard the noise, now she had an invisible person eyeing her down from an unknown location.

“You have no idea who they are do you? You know these woods very well, but yet you act so naïve when it comes to the evident danger that has been lurking in your very own back door.”

Sindri looked around as Elzy pushed him behind her in an act of protection, even though she had no idea what she was trying to protect him from. This man must be lying, how was she not to know about an evil lurker within her very own abode? She felt dumb for not even sensing where this man was coming from.

“Stop toying with me and just tell me who the people you speak of are to us.”

The main laughed, his amusement echoing around the forest. It made Elzy grow angry, not knowing what was happening made it even worse. She needed some answers and she needed them now, otherwise she feared her life as well as Sindri’s would be in danger.
“Why do you laugh?” Elzy growled.

The man ceased his vibrant energy, “I am sorry but it was just so comical of you to say such a thing. Knowing that you are so inexperienced almost makes me want to leave you in the dark so that you will discover the horrible facts resting just under your nose.”

Elzy was tired of being treated like an idiot, “If you continue to not give me answers, then Sindri and I will find you.”

The man laughed again, “Oh my dear that will never happen. But fine, if that is what you so desperately want, I found it funny because the noise you are hearing is not coming from any type of person. They are creatures that can tear you apart as easily as your friend Sindri can to a field mouse.”

Elzy didn’t want to know what he was talking about. Everything upon this world was already dangerous enough and the fact that this unknown monster was so close to her made her apprehension heighten. Did she truly want to know what they actually were? Did she dare ask the question that burned within her mind? She could feel Sindri nudge her and she knew he wanted to know that answer, but she felt like not knowing something this important might help shield her from the unknown.

“So,” the voice started, “Do you wish to know whom I am talking about, or do you wish to cower away from your own dread?”

Elzy took a deep breath, she needed to know, if she was to deny his proposal she would forever want to know just what he had meant. What if in the future, she needed to know this key bit of information and she had turned him down entirely?  She needed to think, but she had already done too much of that.

“Fine,” she said, “Please tell me what you mean by them, if they are indeed not at least human, what could they possibly be if not one of us?”

She held her breath, waiting for the voice to answer her. Moments went by without a word and she grew apprehensive, had she made a mistake in asking for such wisdom?

“You will be shocked at first,” the voice said out of the blue, it made both Sindri and Elzy jump but he continued, “When I first found out I was in shock for a long time, but you have to move forward from such information otherwise they will take you and consume the fear.”

Elzy clenched her knuckles as Sindri jumped upon her shoulder. This man and what he said, made her uneasiness heighten and she began to regret asking for such information. She wanted to escape now, not wanting to hear what this man was about to tell her.

“Are you certain that you want to escape before I let their secrets known? It is up to you, if you wish to run away I will not follow you nor force you to listen to my warnings.”

Elzy took a deep breath nodding her head. She needed to know this and as much as she wanted to run away she needed to face this head on. She looked over at Sindri who nodded his head, giving her a little confidence to speak up. Elzy needed to understand that this was a path that she had to cross, and she was going to cross it eventually, if not now.
“No, just tell me before I give myself reason not to trust you.”

The man seemed to take another long pause before he continued with his sentence, “There are things in this world that you do not even know exist. These creatures are monsters that find anyone that acquires any kind of magical capabilities and consumes them for their own benefit.”

Elzy looked over at Sindri, she hated knowing that he could potentially be hurt by this strange creature. She looked around and waited for the voice to continue, but he once again left her in a long breath of silence, forcing her mind to unravel.

Reiyaa, your writing just gets better and better! I especially love the beginning part, when Elzy is so sure of herself--and then how well you do at changing our impression of her, when the unseen voice speaks up! As always, you do very well IMHO at showing Elzy's going back and forth in her mind, and especially at convincing us that she probably made the right decision in believing and listening to the unknown speaker....

And I LOVE the owl Sindri--he's a perfect addition to the story!
